AN ORGANIC DISCOVERY!
Whilst doing some research for my business pitch for 'Oh My Cod' I discovered Lyncroft Farm in Ormskirk.

Lyncroft Farm is a local farm, just six miles away from Formby, supplying locally produced organic foods. They run an organic veg box scheme with prices ranging from £10 for a small box containing seven vegetable crops to £18 for a family box containing seven vegetable crops, five fruit crops and twelve organic eggs. Free-range of course!

I think that's exceptionally good value, especially when you consider that organic food contains more vitamins and minerals than non-organic food and is more environmentally friendly to boot. Not to mention the much reduced food miles compared to supermarket produce that has more often than not had something of a world tour.

BAD NEWS FOR CHICKENS
In a move to avoid eating broiler chicken I bought a packet of Sainsbury's Crispy Beef with Chilli instead of sweet and sour chicken, which I would normally pick to celebrate Chinese New Year with. To my horror I discovered that the beef's coating contains pasteurised egg, from battery farmed hens no doubt. It seems that no matter how hard you try it is all but impossible to avoid eating battery farmed eggs or broiler chicken.

To add insult to injury and article in The Independent exposed the new £1.99 chicken launched by Tesco today.. The same day that research by Bristol University discovered that 27% of broiler chickens have walking problems by the time they reach 40 days old or slaughter weight. Since there are 800 million broiler chickens in the UK that means that 216 million are in pain. What's really shocking is that that's just the figure for the UK, the worldwide figure must be much higher.

It makes me wish I'd read the ingredients on my chinese supper more in depth.

CRACKING NEWS FOR CHICKENS
I'd like to have the vanity to think that my last post has made a difference. But the decision this weekend by Sainsbury's, Morrisons and the Co-Op to stop selling eggs laid by battery hens within three years was probably based on more than just my opinion.


In today's Sunday Times they point the finger at the RSPCA and Jamie Oliver. Apparently the saviour of the school dinner, will be putting forward the case to abolish the intensive farming of chicken in 'Jamie's Fowl Dinners' on channel 4 this friday at 9pm. Good on him I say.

The timing of the announcement to stop selling battery farmed eggs seems a little suspect to me though. Do the supermarkets really care how chickens are treated or is it just a PR stunt taking advantage of Channel 4's programming this week and the press coverage that it has already and will probably continue to create this week?
